A general rule of thumb which I'm sure you've heard before is
to put everything you think you'll need on the bed and then throw
half of it away. Not really a bad idea considering lugging round
loads of gear can be a real pain in the neck and the lighter the
load the easier everything will seem when you are on the move. You'll
stop knocking me of buses as well! Remember when you leave home
that as long as you have your passport, plane tickets and money
you have everything you could possibly need. Most anything else
can be bought (probably very cheaply) in you country of destination.
However long you are going for, there is never any need for those
HUGE rucksacks strapped both front and back which you see so often
in train stations around Asia. What the hell do these people find
to put in them. Climbing gear for that tricky ascent up the bungalow
stairs? Generator to bring light to the masses? A different set
of clothes for every day of the trip?-seems unlikely given the state
of those with the biggest bags. Maybe they are just voracious readers
and need a book a day. Ok, rant over. Another tip is to take bin
(garbage) bags / plastic bags and lots of them! Keeps every thing
dry, keeps your clean stuff clean, your dirty stuff away from everything
else and allows you to keep your gear separated easily.
