Penang Travel FAQ: Traveling Alone

Question: On Solo Travel - Is it safe for a single woman to travel alone in Penang?

Answer : Penang is an island I have visited many times, both with and without my wife. Everything seems to shut quite early so there's no reason to be out alone at the dead of night and during the day and evening, at least in Georgetown, the capital, everything is pretty bustly and busy. Not much chance of you being dragged away unnoticed. (If you head out to the beach or to the park-anywhere less populated- it might be advisable to find someone to come along with you) 50% of Penang's residents are of Chinese descent while the other 50% are mainly Muslim. I found everyone, the Muslims especially, to be very friendly. It's possible that you as a woman may find some people too friendly but I think the likelihood of any real danger is low. In the unlikely event of you finding yourself being harassed then there are plenty of western orientated cafes/bars to escape to.
