Answer
: Yeah finding English teaching work is a very easy way to support
yourself in Thailand and offered me a decent way of life for 8 years
or so. House, no money worries to speak of as long as I didn't go
out drinking every night, and all the entertainment any big city
has to offer. You're definitely not going to get rich doing this
(around 30,000 to 4000 Baht a month) but you can certainly live
very well. However do yourself and your students a favor first if
this is what you decide to do and get a teaching certificate. Firstly
it means that you can get better paid work. It will also make things
a lot easier for you in the classroom and help you to give the students
what they deserve for the relatively large amount of money they
are spending. This teaching certificate (a celta, a tefla etc) will
also enable you to get a work permit (providing you have a degree)
which in turn means you don't have to worry about leaving the country
every 3 months for a visa.
If you are just looking to prolong your holiday then although you
will find work, you aren't really going to help anyone but yourself
when you split 3 months into a term. If however you're looking for
a way to live in Thailand long term and experience all that it has
to offer then teaching is a very viable way to do this.
Be warned however that language teaching isn't for everyone and
while it might sound easy (I mean you can speak the language right?)
delivering quality lessons and keeping students happy takes a lot
of energy and can be very stressful. Also think about where you
want to live in the Kingdom. Living some where is obviously a lot
different to visiting it as a tourist, traveler or whatever. Bangkok
is the easiest place to find work but some loathe the city…..Me?
I love the place and loved living there.
