Tourists and Foreigners Safety in Vietnam

Question: We are planning a trip to Vietnam but recently my friend has started to get nervous about terrorism and safety generally. How safe is Vietnam?

Answer

Terrorism in Vietnam is EXTREMELY rare these days. In Vietnam you have to give your passport to every Hotel so a record can be made for the police to check. If you are staying in a private abode then you have to register with the police. Big brother is watching but I actually find it strangely comforting.

Kind of moving away from the terrorists a bit because I suppose you just can't use normal logic when talking about them, any kind of violence against foreigners is EXTREMELY rare. Basically because the punishments are so severe. The last time a foreigner was killed (actually that doesn't sound as reassuring as it was meant, does it?) the justice system, such as it is, was speeded up to ensure the death of the perpetrator asap. So don't worry the law will be bended or broken in your favor! I have never felt in any danger in the year and a half I've been living in Hanoi. However if you don't happen to have a non-Asian colored face then I suppose any one out to do you any harm wouldn't know they were in it up to their armpits until it was to late...oh well.

Above all let common sense be your guide and I'm sure you will come to no harm.
